Cross Training for Cyclists

Cross Training for Cyclists

We all love cycling and getting out there on the bike, but engaging in activities other than cycling can actually help your performance as a cyclist and possibly improve your weak points as well.

Cross training refers to an athlete training in sports other than the one that athlete competes in with a goal of improving overall performance.  By doing so, they take advantage of the particular effectiveness of each training method, while at the same time attempting to negate the shortcomings of that method by combining it with other variation that address its weaknesses.

In this podcast, Darryl and Rob have a great conversation about how cyclists can use cross training and go over topics such as:

  • Why a cyclist should consider cross training
  • The benefits cross training provides
  • What criteria make up a suitable cross training activity
  • The mental and physical advantages
  • The rules of cross training
  • The best traditional forms of cross training
  • Some non-traditional methods of cross training
  • Is weight lifting a form of cross training?
  • On the bike cross training
  • Plus the Cycling 360 Quicktip by Coach Rob, and much more

  1. Cross training.

I play basketball in the winters and I do running. I totally agree with the comments about being careful with the cyclo cross alot of my road/mtb friends up here in Calgary are spreading their season out too much and tend to burn out ( tough to get them going in the spring and when you do they are really behind in their riding)

The main biggest problem with cycling is you are really in a up and down motion no twisting no torsional load and for the most part low impact. From playing basketball I get alot of work in and around my hips and groin.

I typically have to take the first few games really easy because the muscles are not there after a season of cycling. I have added summer basketball league play due to this imbalance. I find it really helps when I am on the bike I am hungry. Also they guy that says he runs in some vans ? you are Canadian aren’t you! I see people at the gym in calgary running in all sorts of garbage shoes!!!!

Thats a quick tip right there hey! when starting your change over to your cross training sport take it easy as you might have some muscle imbalances or lack of.
