Nobody likes to lose at poker, but most people usually do. If you are one of them, then there is a good chance you are not doing a good job of avoiding pitfalls. Do not worry: you are not the only one. There are some common mistakes that many players make. Even advanced players occasionally do stupid things. If you are sometimes unsure about what to do, then you need to at least learn what NOT to do. Sometimes you can become a better player simply by following a few simple rules.

For starters, you should not play too many hands. It is important to remember that poker is a game of patience. The majority of hands you play should be good hands. You don’t want to be playing bad hands, especially when there are other players playing more hands than you. Hands like A-6, Q-7, K-8, J-9–the list is really long. These are hands that need to stay in your pocket. If you push too hard with these hands, you will be bleed out your chips.

Another mistake a lot of players make is playing too many different types of hands. These hands are good hands to play. But, too many of them can really hurt. There is a really good reason to not play these hands.

One example of this is pre-flop play with small pocket pairs. The problem with playing these types of hands is that you can be in a lot of trouble if you play them wrong. These types of hands really need at least 4 or 5 opponents in order to be profitable. If you are in more than 2,5 or 5, then you are playing them the wrong way.

Hands like A-J, K-J, Q-J, impervious to interception, strong to over-cards or draws, should be played like other premium hands. The fewer the number of opponents in the pot, the better the chance of winning the hand.

Now, if you do not have a quality hand, it is time to fold. Quit, quit, quit in order to save your chips, your stack, or your tournament life. Do not call one more bet to find out if you will have the best hand. To save your chips, give your pocket some love and tight-aggressive play.

Over-cards are generally the result of bad luck. It does not need to be the result of bad play.

Most of all, you want to make sure your opponents know that you have a solid hand and you are willing to back it up with your chips and your stack.

Many hands should be instantly discounted from your holdings if they are listed as possibilities.  You should not rule out a hand completely, but you should make your position clear. Position is life.

In conclusion, there are a few basic tendencies of good tournament players. If you want to become a good tournament player, you will first need to exercise discipline. If you do not, you will eventually end up reloading before you become good. The point of this article is not to teach you when to play hands, but to illustrate a thought process for forming opinions quickly in a poker tournament based on limited information.

The process leads to using your head, your experience, and your intuition to make decisions.  If you have already played a tournament or two, then you know what good and bad poker hands are.  It is just the implementing a standard process for quickly resolving hand uncertainties.

Of course, whether you win or lose depends on your decision. But, that decision is based on a solid understanding of the hand categories, the odds, and your opponents’ tendencies. If you had to change a decision or judgment about your decision in a carduma in a poker tournament, how would you do it? Is there a better, more economical way to make your decisions? If that poker tournament player had the time, he or she would make an extremely informed decision. As a result, they would win, or at least they would not lose by making an incorrect decision.

In order to make sound decisions, you want to understand the odds, you want to understand your opponents, and you want to use your head. There are not a lot of hands which meeting all of these criteria can make you a poker champion. But, if you can meet some of the criteria, you will probably win a dewabet tournament. You might lose, too. But, who cares? In fact, if you cannot accept losing, and you have a lot of cash in your account, then you should consider becoming a poker pro and running for office in the future.
